The Greek Community of Geelong

The Hellenic Orthodox Community of Geelong is a cornerstone of the Greek-Australian community in the Greater Geelong region, dedicated to preserving and promoting Hellenic heritage, culture, and faith.

Established by Greek migrants in the 1950-60s seeking to maintain their traditions while integrating into Australian society, the Community has grown into a vibrant hub for social, cultural, religious, and educational activities.

Upcoming: 70th Anniversary – Oct 24

Our mission

Our mission reflects a commitment to honouring our heritage while building a vibrant, united community. Guided by faith and culture, we work to strengthen community and preserve traditions.

  • Foster a strong connection among Greek-Australians and future generations.
  • Preserve and promote Greek language, history, and cultural traditions.
  • Support Orthodox Christian faith and values through religious services and community engagement.
  • Provide educational and social opportunities for the broader community.

Religious and cultural presence

At the heart of the Community is its Greek Orthodox Church, which serves as a spiritual and cultural anchor. Regular religious services, sacraments, and celebrations are held, particularly for major Orthodox feast days such as Easter and Christmas.

Beyond its religious role, the Community hosts a variety of cultural events, festivals, and educational programs, including Greek language classes, traditional dance groups, and historical commemorations such as Greek Independence Day (25th March) and Ohi Day (28th October).

Key activities and initiatives
  • Church Services and Religious Education: Regular liturgies, baptisms, weddings, and catechism classes.
  • Greek School: Language programs for children and adults to maintain fluency in Greek.
  • Community Events: Annual festivals, Greek National Day parades, and fundraising initiatives.
  • Welfare and Support Services: Assistance for Greek-Australian seniors and new migrants.
  • Youth and Sports Programs: Engaging younger generations in cultural and social activities.

A thriving community for all generations

With deep historical roots and a commitment to cultural preservation, the Hellenic Orthodox Community of Geelong continues to serve as a bridge between the past and the future, uniting generations through faith, tradition, and shared identity.
